Lou & Em…

1. Underwear…

Throw away the holey old knickers, no matter how comfortable, they need to go. We can no longer suffer thongs so we buy good old M&S Brazilian Knickers. Love stories Intimates do the most gorgeous mix & match underwear sets & Anine Bing’s lace bras are a must for a bra on show look.

2. A Blazer…

Not just for the office. We team our blazers with denim & trainers for a dressed down look for the day and a cami/black trouser combo layered with plenty of necklaces (with that Anine Bing lace bra on show) for an evening. Worth investing in a quality, well-cut blazer for maximum wear. Blaze Milano is pricey but the best.

3. Chanel…

Yes, we know not realistic for all budgets BUT if you want a special forever piece, buy Chanel. For friends 30th’s we’ve often all chipped in and bought Chanel pearls or a brooch, or for something really special, Susan Caplan sources Vintage jewellery, how thoughtful would a Chanel necklace from the year you were born to be?

4. Timeless Bag…

Now with such good high street finds we often have a multitude of bags to choose from. Go back to basics and invest in a good quality, leather, go-to bag. Big enough to hold all of your grown-up stuff.

5. LBD…

Yep we’ve heard this time & time again, invest in an LBD. We’ve often resisted, not wanting to give into the realisation that we don’t have anything more unique to wear BUT there have been times where we’ve had 5 minutes to get ready and really wished we had that reliable dress. We’ve searched for some cool options, throw it on, add a slick of red lippy and you’re good to go!

6. Leather Jacket…

A huge part of our day to day style uniform. Looks effortlessly cool every time you throw it on. Whatever your age you can rock a biker jacket.

7. Well-fitted jeans…

By the time you hit your 30’s you should find out what shape best suits you. Topshop has a huge variety of styles, take the time to go in and try on the ones that suit your shape. Generally, the more expensive the jean the more hold they have, for classic designer denim Rag & Bone & Frame are our go-to. Donna Ida is the Denim Queen, if you’re based in London it’s worth popping into her London store to see what shape is right for you or visit her online Denim Clinic.

8. A Black Court Shoe…

We invested in Manolo Blahnik, the designer made famous by Carrie Bradshaw. Manolo’s BB90 (named after none other than Brigitte Bardot) are a classic style. Never underestimate the versatility of a classic court shoe.

9. Loungewear…

The first thing we do when we get home from a busy day is put on our comfy clothes. Time to ditch the old, scruffy tracksuits and buy into some luxurious separates.

10. A Watch…

We prefer the look of an oversized man’s watch over a delicate ladies styles. Larsson & Jennings have some classic styles and if you’re looking for a forever piece, look no further than a Rolex Daytona.

11. Ear Piercing…

MARIA TASH PIERCING A STYLE ALBUM

You know you’re hitting mid-life when you opt for a crisis piercing. Maria Tash has set up shop in Liberty’s, head there for an uber cool ear make-over.

12. Sunnies…

To hide a multitude of sins and to prevent the inevitable crows feet. An oversized pair of sunglasses is a must. Whether it’s to hide late nights out drinking or late nights up with the baby, get some oversized sunnies on.

13. Sensible Flats…

Because who really wants to totter around in heels all day? Loafers are fully in Fashion & we’re embracing the sensible trend. Gucci led the way and the high street has come up with an affordable alternative.

14. Accesories…

Accessories can make an outfit. Be it a belt, jewellery or a scarf. When you hit your 30’s try to stop buying throwaway accessories and go for forever pieces that you will never tire off.

15. Toothbrush…

Look after your teeth now and save yourself a fortune in the long run! Electric toothbrushes are a necessity for us.

16. Swimwear…

We do believe in paying a little more for swimwear as it will last. Also, the more expensive fabrics will hold you in better and make you more beach confident.

17. The right Foundation & Concealer…

You’d be surprised to hear how many people wear the wrong type and shade for their skin tone. Always go a shade lighter than your skin tone to avoid the dreaded orange look. Take the time out to get matched, your skin changes so much by the time you reach your 30’s it may be worth a makeup overhaul.

18. Nails…

We love a good Mani/Pedi. As we reached our 30’s we stopped experimenting so much with colours and now have our favorite go-to shades. OPI ‘Big Apple Red‘ & Smith & Cult ‘The Graduate‘ are current favorites.

19. Flowers & Candles…

We love filling our home with fresh flowers and will travel that bit further to visit our favorite florists- Scarlet & Violet, Wild & Heart & Flower Bx. A Candle is a lovely little luxury, perfect way to unwind in the bath after a busy day.

20. Haircare…

Super important to maintain your hair in between hair appointments. Oribe is great to put some much-needed nutrition back into our hair after it’s left damaged from all the heat styling. Em swears by Redken Blonde Idol to keep the yellow away and Olaplex is a must to maintain the condition.

21. Khaki Jacket…

Can take you from the school run to Glastonbury. Everyone should have a khaki jacket in their wardrobe. Perfect for unpredictable British weather.

22. Sheets…

You spend half your life in them so why not treat yourself to nice ones. The White Company & La Redoute sheets are our fave. Sleep is more important now than ever. All this work/life/family juggling is tiring!

23. Books…

Step away from your phone and read a good book, it’s a simple pleasure that’s often overlooked in this crazy, switched on world. Coffee table books are a great decorative accessory for your home too. Win win.

24. Moisturiser…

A good skin care routine can make you look radiant & refreshed even if you don’t feel it. Try out skin care brands to find out what works for your skin. As you get older it’s all about the Active Ingredients. The Ordinary have been applauded for the excellent ingredients for low prices. Look after your skin, it’s your best accessory!

25. Vitamins…

We’ve just started on a course of Lumity, an anti-ageing food supplement and are super excited to see the results. Beauty & Go Drinks are also something we drink daily, they taste great & contain collagen and hyaluronic acid so are brilliant for our skin. Talk to your local health food store about what’s right for you.

26. Signature Lippy…

Find your colour and always have one handy, a slick of lippy can empower you.

27. Travel…

TRAVEL A STYLE ALBUM

The older we get the more places we want to see and Travelling becomes a priority for us. We’ve recently ticked Tulum of our hit list, a Californian road trip, Cuba & Mykonos are next. Grab a copy of Chic Stays for some Inspo.

28. Handcream/Handcream…

Super handy and very grown up to carry around a hand cream. We hate the feeling of dry hands. An Aesop handwash is always on the go in our home too.

29. Signature Scent…

LE LABO A STYLE ALBUM

We love having our signature scents. Lou Molecules, Em Le Labo Santal 33. Stay away from anything too overpowering, a nice subtle scent is all that’s needed.

As life gets busy try not to neglect your friends. Time spent with close friends, old or new can really lift your spirits. Laughter really is the best medicine.
